Supporting the Enabling Environment for better WASH services in Northern Bangladesh

Habitat for Humanity in Bangladesh

Project Description

Habitat for Humanity implemented a four year integrated WASH program with a focus on improving access to facilities for the poor and vulnerable while strengthening the enabling environment for better WASH services in Northern Bangladesh.  New water facilities were installed and existing broken down wells repaired. A sanitation revolving loan program was set up with nine Local Community Based Organisations who provided microfinance loans for the construction of latrines, with the repayments successfully being re-invested in additional sanitation loans.

Community WASH Committees and school hygiene groups were engaged for software activities including hygiene promotion, sanitation demand creation, monitoring and maintenance.  Community WASH Committees were linked to government, and a number were elected to local government WASH committees. A school WASH program provided improved access to water and sanitation and water and addressed menstrual hygiene management needs of girls through improved facilities and awareness raising activities with boys and girls.

Private sector actors including local masons were provided with targeted training and technical support.  Masons have gone on to build additional latrines in the project surrounds and educated families on the benefits of investing in improved facilities.

Project Location

The project was implemented in three Districts in Northern Bangladesh: Mymensingh, Tangail and Netrokona.  The 36 rural villages represented a small sample of more than 7,000 villages across the 3 Districts.  The villages were chosen because of low WASH coverage levels, and low presence of other actors implementing WASH programs.
