Sanitation, Hygiene & Water Management Project

Australian Red Cross (ARC) in Nepal

Project Description

Guided by and aligned with Nepal’s Sanitation Master Plan 2011 this project took a Total Sanitation approach in working with four Village Development Committee’s (VDCs) and three wards of one Municipality in Bajhang District all of which have now been declared ODF. The project focussed on constructing new and rehabilitating existing water supply schemes and awareness raising of sanitation with hygiene promotion, integrated into all water and sanitation activities. The project supported women to develop good menstrual hygiene practices including the capacity to produce and sell reusable sanitary pads and worked to break down some of the restrictive practices related to Chhaupadi. Sustainable Water User Groups were formed and coached to ensure ongoing operation and maintenance of water supply systems. Communities were also encouraged to develop systems for solid and animal waste management.  A number of schools across the project communities were assisted to promote hygiene through peer-led WASH clubs and provided with the infrastructure to increase students access to improved sanitation and water.

Project Location

The project was implemented in Bajhang District in Nepal’s remote Far Western Development Region. Covering 3422 square kilometres, this district was characterised by low population density, varied topography with levels ranging from 915 to 7000 metres above sea level and a lack of transport infrastructure which limited accessibility and service delivery. Previous water supply schemes were either partially or totally dysfunctional. The target population was largely ultra-poor and included a number of Dalit communities. Cultural practices such as Chhaupadi created barriers to women accessing water and toilets and practising hygienic behaviours during menstruation.
